Benefits of Learning English
There are many benefits to learning English, just as there are advantages to
learning any foreign language. Improved job opportunities and improved
understanding of other cultures among them. However there are a few
advantages to learning
English
in particular, due to how widely it is spoken around the world in many
professional areas. It has become the language of international
communication, due to the dominance of the US in the business world. English
has also become a valuable tool for many people living in the European Union
as they use English to communicate with people from all over the world.
Studies have shown that over 75 countries have English
as a significant language spoken by their populace. The English language is
the language spoken by the greatest number of non-native speaker with 250
million to 350 million non-native speakers. Over 309 million people speak
English as their first language, as of 2005. One of the biggest advantages
of learning English as a second language is that you will be able to
discover a world of information. This is due to the fact that a large
proportion of the internet is in English.
What are ESL and EFL?
ESL stands for 'English as a Second Language', while EFL is an acronym
for 'English as a Foreign Language'. EFL indicates the use of English in a
non-English-speaking region. Study can occur either in the student's home
country, as part of the normal school curriculum or in an anglophone country
which they visit as an educational tourist. Typically, EFL is learned either
to pass exams as a necessary part of one's education, or for career
progression while working for an organisation or business with an
international focus.
ESL is the use of English is generally by refugees, immigrants and their
children within the Anglosphere. Typically, this sort of English is learned
to function in the new host country. These courses teach students aspects of the English language such
as pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and differences between spoken and
written English. As well as this, there are specialised courses which cater
for different needs of students, including different courses for those
planning to live in different English-speaking countries. Students are often taught through blended
learning, where a combination of games, activities,
listening exercises and grammar reference units help students better
understand English.
