Information about New Zealand

New Zealand consists of two large islands in the South Pacific Ocean, well-known for their snow-capped mountains and green valleys. Its capital is Wellington, however its largest city is Auckland. New Zealand's indigenous population is made up of Maoris, with European settlers arriving increasingly after its colonisation in 1840 by the UK.
New Zealand is located within the Ring of Fire, a region encircling the Pacific Ocean where the movement of tectonic plates leads to volcanic and seismic activity. Volcanic activity continues today in the island's central region. Geysers and hot springs are also found throughout the region, and earthquakes are frequent but generally moderate. Lake Taupo is the largest lake in New Zealand, occupying the crater of an extinct volcano.
The plant life of New Zealand includes about 1,500 indigenous species found nowhere else in the world, including the golden kowhai and the scarlet pohutukawa. Isolation from other landmasses allowed birds, bats, and small reptiles to flourish in the absence of predatory mammals. Without such ground predators, many bird species in New Zealand became flightless or semi-flightless, often nesting on the ground. Land is one of the country's most valuable resources. Much of the soil is not naturally fertile, however, and has to be supplemented with fertilizers for crop cultivation. Mineral resources are limited, with some reserves of coal, gold, iron ore, and limestone. Significant stocks of natural gas and less plentiful reserves of oil are located both offshore and in the western region of the North Island.

Education system in New Zealand

Education in New Zealand is free and compulsory for all children aged 5 through 16. Students spend eight years in primary school, often transferring to specialized intermediate schools for the final two years. Secondary schooling generally takes five years, and it remains free of cost. Most students attend public secular schools.
The system of higher education in New Zealand includes eight universities. The largest are the University of Auckland and Massey University. Other tertiary institutions include the University of Waikato (1964), at Hamilton; the Victoria University of Wellington (1899); the University of Canterbury (1873), at Christchurch; the University of Otago (1869), at Dunedin; Lincoln University (1990), near Christchurch; and the Auckland University of Technology (2000). Several colleges provide teacher training, and polytechnic institutions offer degree programs, diplomas, and certificates in various technical and professional trades.

Anbody wanting to teach in New Zealand should start by applying for registration with the New Zealand Teachers Council. They should also request assessment of their qualifications by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).
Both of these applications should be made as soon as possible. Without registration you can't teach and without the NZQA assessment you can't have your correct salary assessed.
However, it is not uncommon for teachers from overseas to be put on the rate allotted to unqualified teachers at first, even if their papers are in order.
Timing is crucial in getting a job. The New Zealand school year runs from January to December and is divided into four ten-week terms, with three two-week holidays and a six-week Christmas break. Most vacancies come up late in the year.

Mathematics teaching and learning in the early years in Aotearoa/New Zealand - Early Childhood Australia
Early Childhood Australia advocates to ensure quality, social justice and equity in all issues relating to the education and care of children from birth to eight years.

This paper presents an overview of events in Aotearoa/New Zealand mathematics education over the past decade or so. We begin with the curriculum reforms of the 1990s that led to the development of the current mathematics curriculum (Ministry of Education, 1992), and document developments in policy, resources and approaches to teaching. There has been a strong emphasis on improving student achievement, and the overview illustrates how developments in the school sector have been accompanied by a focus on early childhood education, adult numeracy, and community involvement in children’s learning. We conclude by reflecting on the current curriculum review, and what this might mean for practice.
